How to enter smoothly into spinning (Sword Spin tutorial)

23. July 2017 by Miglena

When I planned and selected the spins for the series „15 spins into climbing“ I made sure to put my favourite spins into this compilation. But I also payed attention to cover the essential spinning techniques progressively in the single tutorials.

My idea for these series is to make it possible to learn from the very first beginners spin and to build your way up to the more advanced spins.

WHY THE SWORD SPIN?
The Sword Spin was never a part of my pole practice. That’s why I was hesitant whether I should include it into the 15-spins list. I always thought, that it’s one of those standard old school spins, that you HAVE TO learn as a beginner. And that it doesn’t look exciting enough to be worth practicing.

But as a teacher I had to give it a try. And as a teacher, I know now that I need to share it with you.

There’s a HUGE takeaway from this tutorial, if you want to be able to enter smoothly into spinning. And it’s so simple, once you understand how to use the pivoting correctly!

It’s one of those details that make all the difference whether your spin is going to look and feel smooth at the end.

To cut right to the chase, you can jump to 1:25 of the video. This is what’s happening there:

  1. Pull away from the pole while you’re pivoting on your standing leg. Why? To keep the hips away from the pole and spin smoothly. Nothing new so far.
  2. Bu how to bring the leg high on the pole without jumping? It’s not about the move. It’s about the right timing. Pivot long enough and wait until your standing leg NATURALLY bends. As soon as your knee or your shin touch the pole, simply slide the leg up the pole and hook it, as described in the video.

So, that’s how simple the big secret is! We are so obsessed with moves, that sometimes we miss the right timing.

To my surprise, I was even able to make this move look exciting, while I was playing with it. 🙂 I couldn’t resist and I put some advanced moves into the combo. So, take note that this is an intermediate and advanced combo.

Play with the spin, get creative and share with others. ❤ #15spinsintoclimb
